On the Run

I'm feeling dark and angsty... so here's a pic and a drabble. I might work it in to 'Faith of the Fallen' at some point, but for now, make of it what you will.

They had been running for longer than she could remember.
Walking slowly down the hallway, she cautiously peered into each and every room, searching for a suitable place for them to sleep. They needed someplace small and secure, preferably with a fireplace.

Finding nothing in the first few rooms, she paused and looked back over her shoulder. Severus stood in the entranceway, looking around absently at the crumbling ruins of the once grand manor. It would serve as their shelter for a day or two – maybe a week if they were lucky.

They usually weren't.

When the Final Battle had been lost, those loyal to the Light had fled for their lives. For their efforts, they were hunted ruthlessly by those on the side of Darkness... only the lucky ones met Death.

Hermione shivered, shaking her head to clear away the fearful thoughts. "Severus?" she called softly.

He turned and smiled softly before walking to join her. "Find anything?" he asked quietly.

"No. Nothing down here. The rooms are too big -- too open."

He nodded. "Let's keep looking."

As they walked further into the old house, Hermione knew in her heart that their time was running out. She knew Severus felt it too, even though he would never say anything. She also knew that she would do whatever it took to keep the man she loved safe. Even if it meant Death... or worse.

What shook her to the core was that the thought of dying didn't frighten her... it was the thought of what she would have to do to keep Severus alive... 'Anything,' she said to herself. 'I swear on my life... I'd do anything to keep him safe... I'd give up my soul for him.'

Little did she she realize, that in less than twenty-four hours, her vow would be put to the test. Would her soul survive?

Okay... sorry for the crappy drabble... it's midnight and I'm suffering from a bout of insomnia.
