Waiting...

Just a drabble that will probably make its way into the story in a later chapter. Enjoy!

He crouched behind a rusty dumpster in the dark alleyway next to his flat -- a silent spectator to the bright, noisy night life beyond the threshold of the dark recess in which he waited. His wand was clasped tightly in his right hand -- it still felt slightly foreign after so many years -- and although his posture may have seemed relaxed to the casual observer, every muscle was tensed, every sensation in overdrive.

It was coming. He had no idea in what shape, form, or fashion it would show itself, but Severus Snape knew without a doubt that tonight... after more than fifteen years... they would finally stop running.

At that, his thoughts turned to Hermione, waiting in the second story flat of the building against which he now leaned. His newly erected wards were impregnable, and she too had her wand. She was safe... protected. Still, it had taken all his powers of persuasion to make her stay behind.

It was not in Severus' nature to doubt himself, but he quickly found that he was questioning the validity of his earlier words of reassurance to the almost hysterical witch.

He was not allowed the luxury of time in which to doubt himself, because suddenly... There! A sharp crack near the alley entrance resounded off the stone walls of the buildings. It was accompanied by the sharp, static sizzle of magic.

He steeled himself before peering around the edge of the dumpster. Finally... after all these years...

... he was about to come face to face with his past.
